Man Up tells the story of Lake Bell’s character Nancy accidentally coming across a blind date and just going with it. It actually turns out pretty good for everyone involved!
I had the chance to see Lake Bell and Simon Pegg’s new film ‘Man Up’ prior to the Australian release on November 4, thanks to StudioCanal Australia. So I thought it would be appropriate to get this review out now that the film is out in Australia… and because I am trying to get this review in while I have a lot of other things to do.

I guess I kind of knew what to expect when going into this movie. I saw the trailer, I laughed, and thought most of it was really sweet. I have to be honest though, I am not the biggest fan of Simon Pegg. I liked him in Paul and that’s about it. I’m not the biggest fan of Shawn of the Dead, but I did like Hot Fuzz a lot.
As for Man Up, I liked Simon Pegg a lot. He was charming and a really good partner to Lake Bell, acting wise and also making it believable that these two would actually be a real couple in real life, somewhat making the movie more realistic. Besides being a movie with actors and fake scenarios.
One of the great things about this movie is the bond of Nancy’s family. It’s really good to see a family in a film that aren’t trying to kill each other or just downright hate each other so much.
I don’t want to get too much into the film because you should probably go see it yourself. But, I did think this was just going to be some generic and mediocre romantic comedy we have seen so many, many times before. But, in all honesty, it wasn’t. I loved Lake Bell and I loved Simon Pegg in this movie. And the chemistry these two had as a couple was fantastic.
Also, the villain of the story, Sean, is also incredible, he is the kid from school that had a crush on Nancy and tries to do whatever he can to get with her. Sometimes its pathetic, and others, it’s brilliant with the crazy stuff he comes up with.
I also really liked Lake Bell’s British accent. She done a fantastic job with the accent. You would even think she was actually British. Spoiler alert: She isn’t! But seriously, their acting was good. There is no point rating them separately, or doing pros and cons, because that would just be pointless.
This was an overall good movie. I liked it, the characters were great, the story was charming, and I am not the only one that laughed in the screening room, everyone else did, too. Which I really liked, because the last thing you want is to be sitting next to some artsy fartsy film critic who doesn’t laugh at offensive jokes while you’re laughing like an idiot.
