Safety Not Guaranteed is a 2012 comedy film inspired by a 1997 Backwoods Home Magazine classified ad (written as a joke filler by John Silveira) by a person asking for someone to accompany him in time travel. It was screened at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival where it won the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award.
The film starts off as Darius Britt who gets asked to take on the task on finding who this guy is that wants to travel back in time as long as they know that Safety is not Guaranteed. Mr. Britt is fine with his daughter going out of town for this task from her work. Darius, Arnau and Jeff go on their trip out of town. They go past various locations.
Darius and Arnau wait outside of the post office to find out who the mystery person is, until Kenneth opens the mailbox revealing to be the mystery guy. Darius follows him for a drive. Up until he gets to a Laser Technology facility. Darius then follows him to a Grocery store where he works. Jeff is happy about Darius’ detective work about finding out who the guy was and where he works. The next day: Jeff, Darius and Arnau arrive at Kenneth’s house. Arnau awkwardly tried to hit on Darius while Jeff walks up to Kenneth’s house.
Jeff meets Kenneth for the first time. Kenneth doesn’t talk at first; but Jeff tells him that he wants to join him on his mission to go back in time. Kenneth is skeptical about Jeff going back in time with him. Kenneth asks Jeff if he has ever stared danger in the eye. Jeff says “Yes” but Kenneth doesn’t like Jeff. He wants him to get off his yard. Jeff gets back in the car and gives up. Later that night: Darius is back at the grocery store where Kenneth works. She asks Kenneth if they sell guns. She makes fun about how bad Kenneth’s ad was. Kenneth is skeptical about letting her travel in time with him. Darius follows Kenneth to a secret location, which also happens to be just an alley.
Kenneth gets out of his car and Darius tells him that they have been follows, sadly a couple accidentally comes in-fire of Kenneth holding a gun. Kenneth calls Darius and tells her that they are going to have to choose a new location to meet some other day. The next day: Kenneth and Darius meet at an American football game. Kenneth tells her everything that is going on. Kenneth is still needed to be sure that he can trust her. Arnau and Jeff get kicked out of the football game for drinking and being jerks.
The next day: Kenneth and Darius are in the bush shooting at fake targets to learn how to shoot guns, mostly on bottles, but they’re learning other techniques; rolling, jumping, running and various others. Darius tells Kenneth the reason she is going back in time is to stop some random guy from killing her mother. Darius blames herself for the death of her mother, mostly because she asked her mother if she could go and get her some chocolate milk. Kenneth admits that he trusts Darius now. Kenneth and Darius are in a Cafe talking about their plan. Kenneth awkwardly runs away when Darius notices that his fake ear is falling off. Kenneth admits it’s a fake ear.
The reason why Kenneth wants to go back in time is so he can go back to the time prior to his ear getting cut off. Darius meets up with Kenneth and they drive off to the Laser Technology facility. Kenneth tells Darius that they are going to break into the place. She is slightly freaking out. Kenneth breaks into it and forces the security guard to open the doors. Kenneth makes his way to the restricted area. All the workers watch Kenneth as he walks out of the building with all the things he stole. He opens the back of his van and chicks all the stuff in it and Darius speeds off in the van with Kenneth.
Kenneth tells Darius that he is going back in time to stop some girl he used to like from doing something stupid. Darius finds out that there are really people following Kenneth, so she, Jeff and Arnau follow Kenneth too. Kenneth releases that he is being follows, so he tries to lose them around streets. Kenneth calls Darius and tells her that it is nearly time, and she should meet him at the beach so they can move forward. Kenneth tells Darius that he is under threat because of the power he has that they some how want.
Kenneth gets Darius to give Shannon, his worker a box of money. Shannon is pleased and he hopes Kenneth gets where is going and it works out all fine for him. Jeff starts having a relationship with an old flame of his, and he seems very happy. Kenneth and Darius head in the bush; Kenneth shows Darius an empty secret tin.
Darius and Kenneth kiss by a campfire and spend the night having sex. The next day: Jeff tells Darius that Kenneth is lying about that he wants to go back in time to find his girlfriend; which it turns out that his former girlfriend actually lives only an hour away and that Kenneth is clearly nuts. Jeff and Darius go to the former girlfriends house to do an interview with her, but Jeff leaves Darius to go-it alone. The former girlfriend is Belinda, played by Kristen Bell – she tells Darius that Kenneth was a nice guy, but she didn’t really see him as a boyfriend, just a close friend. Belinda talks about how Kenneth had an accident.
Two unnamed people from the government tell Darius and Jeff that they are trying to get Kenneth for breaking in to one of their research facilities and stealing stuff. Jeff gets Darius to go talk with Kenneth about what is going on. Darius goes into Kenneth’s house. Darius tells Kenneth that she talked to those guys and that they said Kenneth is a spy. And she also tells him that she talked to his ex-girlfriend, Belinda. Kenneth gets freaked out, and in-denial admits that everything is fine. Darius tells Kenneth that she really likes him. Kenneth tells Darius to come to the launch site. Jeff runs in the house and tells Kenneth why they are there. Kenneth freaks out and runs out. Darius yells at Jeff for being a jerk about the whole thing and that he is only there to score with an old girlfriend and that’s the only reason.
Darius, Jeff and Arnau go into Kenneth’s garage and find all these tables with designs for a time machine. Darius runs into the woods to grab the tin box hoping Kenneth left a message. She goes further into the woods and finds Kenneth with a big jet-filled time machined boat. Kenneth confronts Darius about the article. Darius tells Kenneth how she really feels about him and how she really wants to be with him. Kenneth accepts her onto his time machine.
Kenneth and Darius travel in time; leaving Jeff, Arnau, and the two detectives in awe.

Jeff Garlin as Darius’ dad was great, and Jake Johnson as Jeff was a good choice too. Also the cameo by Kristen bell.” cat1rating=”4.5″ cat2title=”The Story:” cat2detail=”I didn’t really know what the story was about.
